Google has announced a new earthquake alert system for Android phones in India. This system uses sensors in your phone, like accelerators, to detect tremors or shaking.

The company worked with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC) to create this system. It will send early earthquake alerts to Android users in areas where earthquakes might happen. These alerts will be in Indian languages that Android supports.

There are two types of alerts Google sends. One is called "Be Aware." It goes to users who feel shaking at MMI 3 & 4 during an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 or more. It simply shows a message on your screen and doesn't make any noise if your phone is set to "Do Not Disturb" or silent mode.

The other type of alert is for more intense shaking, MMI 5+. It happens during an earthquake with a 4.5 magnitude or higher. This alert will bypass your phone's settings, including "Do Not Disturb," and make a loud noise. It also gives you advice on what to do for safety, like taking cover under a table.

Google's system can detect possible earthquakes by using data from many Android phones when there's seismic activity in an area. According to Google, these alerts often come several seconds before you feel the shaking.

In 2020, Google introduced Android Earthquake Alerts in California. To get these alerts, you need a phone with Android 5 or newer and a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. Your location settings also need to be turned on.

To start getting earthquake alerts, you can go to Settings > Safety & Emergency and then select Earthquake Alerts. Alternatively, you can turn on earthquake alerts by going to Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake Alerts.

Google is also already providing AI-powered flood alerts for all parts of India. They started testing flood alerts in Patna, the capital of Bihar state, in 2018, and in 2020, they expanded this service to cover all of India.

In summary, Google's earthquake and flood alert systems are notable examples of how technology can be harnessed for the greater good. By providing crucial information and guidance during critical moments, Google is contributing to the safety and well-being of millions of people in India. As technology continues to advance, it is heartening to see companies like Google use their resources to address real-world challenges and make a positive impact on society.
